So yesterday we left somewhat early (not as early as we should've) to leave for St Louis! Friday night I was sooo very lucky to have Cassie come help me load the car, and to help narrow down what was really necessary and what I could leave behind, as we quickly realized it would not all fit. I took a very nice picture to show how full to the brim Ronaldo (the Rav) was, but of course my cord to connect the camera is somewhere in the fully packed to the brim car, and so... no photo on this blog. Sorry! Anyway it is quite impressive and maybe I'll do a before and after when I get to Colorado! I couldn't have done it without Cassie and my mom's help. I was a spastic mess trying to figure out what I could leave behind. And sadly I left lots of good books, but hopefully they can be mailed to me!
Before we left, the wonderful people at the Panera in Southern Pines somehow got it out of me that we were driving to Colorado, and gave us free pastries!! Hoorah for wonderful Panera people! So Mom and I set out loaded down with all my books (which, honestly lets face it, that was the major content of the boxes in my car) and our free pastries. We drove through NC, VA, West VA, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and finally arrived in Missouri. It was supposed to be 13 hours, I don't know how long it actually took us, but it was probably around 15 hours (felt like forever!) Of course I hit the Wake - Duke game traffic in Winston-Salem (go Deacs!!!) and a wall of rain in various parts of the drive. After driving about 3 hours and then it starts POURING just as we hit the mountains of VA. Which was sad because that is one of my favorite parts of the drive, and because of the rain, I could barely see the road... forget the mountains! Once they did appear out of the gloom, they were beautiful! The leaves are just starting to change to a golden yellow. I'll miss NC fall, but hopefully Colorado will be a beautiful fall too! My second favorite part of the drive was Lexington, Kentucky. Beautiful rolling hills, the greenest grass you've ever seen, and the landscape dotted with horses and big beautiful barns. My least favorite part of the drive was Indiana... flat and dull with not to many places to stop. (i don't know how i'm going to handle Kansas!) Thankfully Mom was able to help with the driving some and I got to sneak in a couple of naps, but by the time we got to St Louis (11:30 STL time = 12:30 at home) we were pretty much delirious! Thank goodness for Star Island, by Carl Hiassen. It is an absurdly ridiculous book but helped keep me going! I haven't quite finished it yet, but it is pretty good. The narrator did wonderful voices with amazing southern/boston/and even new york accents!
I'm in St Louis now and may not update for a few days. Spending lots of time with family, and trying to rest before I take off for another 13 hour drive (through flat corn-field Kansas!)
