Dreaming of a White Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching! Bells are ringing, children singing, lights twinkling, and the smell of christmas cookies and pine trees fill the air. I'm very very excited about traveling home to be with the family and seeing my wonderful friends! I may not have a White Christmas this year, but I still love this song! Enjoy....

Christmas Bells are Ringing!

Cashier looking at my purchases of gift wrap, tape, and sushi:  "So does this mean you are all done after this purchase?"
Me: "bahahahaha! no."

All the gifts I have bought online, except for one package, are "undeliverable". Which means that a) I have to call USPS and yell b) my stuff is definitely not getting home by Christmas Eve c) the shopping that I did have left has now grown considerably d) I'm going to have to fight to return the stuff that didn't make it home e) these are not things you can buy at your every day mall!

UGH! Have I mentioned that I strongly dislike shopping? I love Christmas. I love wrapping presents and listening to Christmas music and watching Christmas movies on TV (ok certain movies, not of the lifetime variety...more of the Love Actually and The Holiday and Miracle on 24th Street variety).  However I absolutely hate the holiday madness and mall crowds.

Also there is a considerable lack of snow here in Colorado. It's the week of Christmas and no snow on the ground? How is this possible? Even crazier, it is so warm outside that yesterday I went with Katie to go kick a soccer ball around at a park, in shorts and a t-shirt, and I was completely comfortable. Yep, it's 60 degrees today here in Colorado. Which I have to say was awesome for soccer! I haven't touched a soccer ball in forever so it was kind of sad, but Katie and I had a blast goofing off and trying to remember all the silly soccer games you play as a kid.

Despite the present delivery conundrum and the lack of wintery weather, I am still celebrating and revving up for the holiday! This weekend I had people over for the first time! Carolyn and Janna came over Saturday during the day to bake cookies. We made 101 sugar cookies.... which turns out is a TON of cookies (entirely too much for 5 people to consume on a Saturday night). On top of that, Rae (office manager at work) requested more Monster Cookies this week. So I have a ton of those as well. Despite having people over on Saturday night, where massive amounts of cookies were consumed considering there were only 5 of us, I still have cookies all over my kitchen!! Hopefully I can get rid of most of them at work tomorrow!

Adorable GingerPeople!

What is Christmas without  Holiday Dino's?!

So to sum up: the holiday season is in full blast here. This weekend consisted of christmas cookies, friends, soccer (ok maybe not so holiday-ish), lots of curling up on the couch watching christmas movies: Love Actually, Prancer, Miracle on 24th Street, and then finally gift shopping this afternoon! Tis the season... falalalala.

I'm really excited to be going home to the Pines on Friday! Xmas with the family, playing with the new puppy, catching up with friends, and then SBG brunch!! Maybe I will even have some cookies to bring home to them!

Also I just saw this today and thought it was adorable, not as good as the bears, but still..... Merry Christmas!

"I should hardly admire more if real stars fell and lodged on my coat" - H.D. Thoreau on Snowflakes

This weekend my parents were here! We went skiing at Breckenridge. I have been to Breck three times so far this year, and every time I have gone it has been packed!! This weekend wasn't bad because we had so much snow the roads were closed!

I had the fortunate opportunity to take friday off of work (which yes, my friends, that meant a glorious four day weekend)! My parents got here Thursday night, and we left at the crack of dawn on Friday (in true Menendi fashion). It started snowing halfway to the mountain, and didn't stop until Monday morning. We had 24'' of snow, and there was no-one on the mountain until late Saturday. Needless to say it was glorious! Here are the winter wonderland pictures!

View from our room

The lift line for first tracks in the fresh 14'' of powder!

Mom and Dad ready to go

First tracks!

"it's up to your knees out there"

you could easily get lost in powder this deep (the vertically challenged people such as myself)

There is literally no-one here! (besides my parents you see in the distance)

Rockin the helmet.  My face looks tiny.

Then today my dear friend Theresa, who is currently studying glassblowing in Sweden (read her blog here )  sent me my very first Christmas ornament! Sadly I do not have a tree to hang it on, so I bent 3 nails trying to get it above the fireplace, until I gave in and just put it on the wall. It is beautiful and I love it!

Pretty glass ornament made by T!

My wonderful xmas card from T! I have no idea what "God Jul" means in Swedish, but I like to think it means "good yule" what is yule anyway? There are yule-logs and yule-tide.... maybe it is swedish? Thank heavens for internet!
I must now leave you for the night, as there are many holiday cards to write!

God Jul everyone! :)

Overheard in PT

"you know yawning is contagious" - hungover patient
"I'm sorry, I don't know why I'm so tired today, I even went to bed early last night!" - me
"You need to party more. It will rejuvenate you" - hungover patient

"My back hurts more today! And I don't think I did anything different."
1 minute later.... "Oh, wait yes I did! I was sitting on a desk attached to a wall... and it broke!"

"if my patient shows up 20 minutes late again, i'm going to scream!" - me to a student
"you know what you need? Tequila!" - student

"Have you been doing your exercises every day?" - me
"oh yes, I'm all about consistency. That's why I have to have my appointment scheduled at the exact same time" - patient (who showed up 20 minutes late... AGAIN)
"how about working on consistency with coming to therapy? You have cancelled or missed half of your scheduled appointments. If you come more often, you will progress more quickly" - me
"Oh, have I really missed that many? wow. Well I'll see what I can do" - chronically late and absent patient

Ten minutes later:

"Well you won't be seeing him again for two weeks." - A (front desk)
"WHAT?! Why not?!!"- me
"we didn't have any openings in for the same time slot. We had some half an hour later though, but he wouldn't come unless it was the same time" - A
Seriously?!?!

Patient quotes

Patient quote of the day:

"I'm tired today. We had our Christmas Party this weekend" - Patient
"Oh, did you have fun?" - me
"Yeah, I danced a lot!" - Patient
"How did your knee feel with that?" - me
"Great! The right combination and I'm fine!" - Pt
"What combination is that?"
"Crown and ice!" - Pt

20 minutes later....

"Do you need some water?" - me
"No, but I'll take a beer!" - Pt

Somehow all my patients think we run a bar... maybe we should open one next door?

"there are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them" - vicki baum

OK, so the quote doesn't really have much to do with anything in this post. Other than the fact I've been dancing around today for exercise, mostly because I'm going crazy with studying... but until we get to that...

Determination, my friends, determination!

About what you may ask? Well let me tell you, about this blog! As you can tell I am a very busy bee and have hardly any time to write! (not entirely true, just sometimes I would rather drink wine and read a good book snuggled under the blankets while watching the snow fall!)  But my friends, I've decided since we are all such busy bees, I will try to stick with this a little bit longer and maybe just have shorter, more frequent blog events!

Today was very very busy (ha). I returned my redbox movie: Letters to Juliet - definitely a cheesy romantic movie, yet wonderful if you like that kind of thing. I may or may not have leaked a few tears, although the ending was absurd! I took my skis to the shop to get tuned. I realized this weekend while I was skiing with my sister that my skis can't handle the late afternoon/early season ice patches, they slide right over and I almost bite the dust! Plus my parents will be here in two weeks and we are going for a 3 day ski vacation, so my skiis need to be in shape! Then I got some groceries, some wine, and spent the rest of the day studying and planning my week.

Studying you ask? Aren't you a doctor already? Well yes I am (still surreal) but I am taking yet another certification test on Saturday. The CSCS - Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam. I'm nervous!! I feel like I've hardly studied at all. Hopefully my PT background will help me!

Next Monday, I am in charge of the clinic as my bosses are off to a Titleist certification course (yep that's a PT course specializing in golf training and rehab). I'm really nervous, but also excited. I'm just concerned one of the techs (who is basically my age) wont listen. I'm definitely still transitioning from student to PT, and need to take more initiative/control with the techs. I'm also praying that nobody gets sick, or has exacerbations, or sudden adverse events during the day I am alone! Not that I haven't handled two of those already since working here, but it's awful calling 911 - and worse when you don't have your wonderful mentors telling you how well you handled it and helping calm you down! No, the incidents were not my fault. They both have conditions where these adverse events could happen anywhere, and they just happened to be in my treatment session. Although sadly I think it did scare one of my less mentally sound patients away.

Tonight I had dinner again with Carolyn and Paul. They are so wonderful! They had me over for Thanksgiving last week and I had a blast with Carolyn's family, who I haven't seen in at least ten years. Hoorah for old friends!

Thank you so much my dear readers for sticking with me! You are all very wonderful! I have had readers recently from the UK and New Zealand even! Welcome new friends :)

"No Soup For You!!!" - Seinfeld

Thank you my dearest faithful readers for keeping up with me despite me not keeping up with you! (yes that makes sense, I swear it does!)

I will try not to drone on and on about how much I love this new state of mine, but have I mentioned that I LOVE IT!  Last weekend Katie and I went to Breckenridge for the opening ski weekend.

It was a ton of fun, despite the crowds! Katie borrowed a snowboard from a friend and decided to take lessons. After I left her at her snowboard class I hit the slopes (and by slopes I mean lift line)!  Basically imagine hundreds of people sliding into each other in lines at the bottom of a hill. I immediately jumped into the single line (it always moves faster), however I had to hike up half the bunny hill to even get in the singles line! Then I had to work really hard not to slide down into the person in front of me as the line moved back down the hill. Thankfully it was only 15 minutes (GAH!) in the line. So I get on the lift with these three obnoxious teenagers... you know the type. They were on snowboards and giggling and being absurd, talking about how they switched to snowboarding and how they could be so much better at skiing by now, like their little sister, but no they switched. However they were convinced they would never go back, until their body actually couldn't snowboard anymore. I really wanted to tell them how when they are old and their knee cartilage is gone and they can hear their bones rubbing together, that snowboarding is actually nicer on the knees than skiing... but I kept my mouth shut. Let them find out the hard way! So I am very thankful as we near the top of the lift, and then the girl next to me says "I hope I don't fall this time!" well crap!

Of course she does fall, and takes me with her. I lost both skiis, poles, and had to duck under the chairlift! Very exciting for not doing any skiing yet.

Thankfully the rest of the day went much better. Not much improvement in the lift line, but it started snowing and snowed all day so the conditions were great! I met Katie for lunch and we went to the bar, which was packed with people. So we joined this guy sitting at a table by himself. After we started talking to him a bit, his friends show up, and had to find more chairs since this guy gave us his chairs. They turned out to be nice, and Katie told me later that she had actually met them before (but they hadn't remembered at all)!

Then we split again and I spent the afternoon mastering Moguls! It felt great, and the last hour and a half was wonderful because it only took 2 minutes to get through the line and it was still snowing! You just can't beat the feel of the crisp air in your face, the smell of the snow, the spray of the powder. I love it!

After a wonderful day on the mountain

After skiing we walked to the Breckenridge Brewery for dinner, and through the snowy christmas lights on the way back. It was beautiful!

This weekend I spent a lot of time studying for the CSCS exam with some friends from work. Then Sunday night I saw the new Harry Potter movie! It was wonderful you should see it! I won't give anything away, but I was cracking up because Hermione had a tiny little bag packed with anything and everything (think Mary Poppins), including a small stack of books. Which only reminded me of my friend Jenny, who once took a red purse to a bar. The bag fell off the bar (chair? i dont remember, but she dropped it) and the purse hit the floor with a loud thump! Turns out it was FULL of books! "the library hit the floor!" My friend probably thought i was completely absurd giggling away at those few scenes in the movie, but all I could think of was JD at the bar! There were also a lot of dark scenes, and things jumping out at you. I personally thought that there were far too many small children there (especially one who kept crying and crying), I guess half the parents haven't read the books and don't realize how dark the last book is! Which, by the way, I am now re-reading.

Then today I ran through Garden of the Gods again. It was gorgeous! I had a flashback to right after my interview, which was the last time I ran there. It was kind of surreal to realize how much has happened in the last few months! My next stop was Poor Richard's - a delicious little cafe/bookstore/restaurant/toy store. I had delicious hot cider, and then ordered some soup. I waited 20 minutes and then finally asked the barista how long it should really take soup to come from the restaurant (which was basically two rooms over), and they brought me my soup and said I could get a gift card before I left. I had basically paid $4 for my soup, and they gave me a $10 gift card! I win!! Thank goodness for good business practices and free things.

I'm excited about this week! I only work 3 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday). I'm having Thanksgiving with Carolyn and her family, including her sister, one of my closest friends from middle school, who I haven't seen in at least 10 years! Then my sister gets here on Friday and I think we're going to go skiing! It's going to be a great week. :)

"The average american will eat 35,000 cookies in a lifetime."

Monster Cookies 101:
(courtesy of Paula Deen and the food network)

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 jar (yes a whole freaking jar!) peanut butter
  • 1 stick butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (or more if you like... i used half of a bag)
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 4 1/2 cups quick cooking oatmeal (not instant)

"one of these things is not like the other, one of these things doesn't belong"

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. In a large bowl mix up eggs and sugars

3.  Mix in salt, vanilla, PB, and butter, Then add in everything else!

Put heaping spoonfuls (ok technically tablespoons if you are picky) onto the cookie pan

Bake 8 - 10 minutes. Let stand 3 minutes before transferring to cool.

Eat Sushi (this will keep you from eating ALL the cookies before your party!)

Get a lot of tupperware. This recipe makes A TRUCKFUL of cookies. They are delicious, but nobody needs that many cookies. Put them in some tupperware to bring to other friends, work colleagues, and to hand out in the street.  DO NOT give them to people with peanut allergies... unless you really really hate them and are prepared to call 911 or perform CPR. These cookies are loaded down with Peanut Butter! (I guess you could always substitute with some other form of almond butter or something if you are allergic - sorry T!)

These cookies were a HUGE success! Enjoy!!!

"Wine is Sunlight, held together by water" - Galileo Galilei

Have you all seen the website of 1000 awesome things ??  Thanks to my awesome friends, I now own the book of awesomeness. However, sometimes it is much better to come up with your own list. In anticipation of Thanksgiving, I'm going to go through a few of my very own "awesome" things, which happen to also be things I am thankful for.  With no further ado, and in no particular order:

1.  My awesome friends! This week I got not one, but two packages from my friends! The first being delicious Swedish chocolate and candy from Theresa, and the second being a book from Jenny (which I had happened to leave at her beach house this summer...ooops!)  It is very exciting to get mail.

2.  Delicious wine, such as this one, which I am drinking right now!

Do you see the cheetah on the bottle? There are also Cheetah spots on the cork which were a fun surprise!

3. Adorable children selling delicious baked goods of sugary awesomeness outside of grocery stores.  Today there was a gymnastic team outside of King Soopers selling cookies and other yumminess in preparation for their state competition. This of course reminded me of my sister Kacin, and all her gymnastics events when we were growing up, so I obviously was obliged to buy some peanut butter cookies. They came in packs of 4... this is what is left:

4. Grocery stores with idiotic names like King Soopers. I couldn't make that crap up. My mentors/bosses like to call it "King Stupid's" which it is. Especially at the one I went to today which was OVERRUN with idiots blocking the aisles. The gymnastic kids' cookies totally made it worth while though.

5. Golfing! This was my 4th time out golfing in Colorado Springs. There is a gorgeous course here that has amazing views of the mountains. It is unseasonably warm here, which makes for wonderful golfing weather. I'm steadily improving. Considering that I'm playing on these old wood irons, I have to say I'm doing quite well! In fact, yesterday I made a 40 foot putt! Watch out Tiger.

6. Daylight Savings.  Isn't it wonderful to sleep in?

7.  Expensive cheese. Have I mentioned how much I love cheese? Today I made the mistake of going to "King Stupid's" without eating much lunch. Which meant that I bought A LOT of cheese, and not only your typical boring mozzarella type cheese (which I did end up getting some of as well, to make some cheesy chili). Of course I had to get the expensive cheese! Have you heard of Manchego? It's a delicious spanish cheese that happens to go quite well with red wine like Sebeka. They didn't have any Manchego, so instead I bought this other Spanish cheese: Canto de Mantalban.  Apparently it's very similar to Manchego, except it is a combo of sheep, goat, and cow milk.  It's actually quite delicious, but not as sharp as Manchego.  I am still deciding which I like better. Here is my ridiculous collection of cheese:

8. Cooking. It's very therapeutic to chop things into tiny little pieces. It's also quite exciting to take one recipe (Erin's "Blanco Chili") and turn it into something else. It's base is the same - white beans such as white kidney beans, navy beans, and garbanzos. I added to the recipe some habanero sauce, red peppers, tomatillos, and used paprika instead of cumin. I'm also adding Havarti cheese and mozzarella, where as the original calls for white cheddar. Oh and a touch of red wine, just because. Final product:

Delicious Habanero Sauce!

9. SEASON SKI PASS!  Yesterday I bought my ski pass that gets me unlimited access to Breckenridge, Keystone, and A-Basin, as well as 10 days at Vail and Beaver Creek. I can't wait to use it! Sadly, the resorts that are open only have a couple runs open. I'm getting antsy to use my fancy new season pass!!

10. People thinking that I have a southern accent.  When I "Fake" the accent, all my colleagues and patients at work think that it's adorable.  Occasionally if I am stressed out or annoyed it will actually be a real southern accent, but not as intense as one would expect from a girl from NC/GA.  I have one patient from Texas who actually has an accent, and it feels like home. I would have never thought that I would miss the southern drawl.

There are a lot of other things that are awesome which I am thankful for, but I believe that is all I will leave "ya'll" with tonight.

Hope you all have enjoyed your weekend and are still adjusting to the time change, so you can enjoy an extra hour of sleep tomorrow... which, of course... is AWESOME!

"The dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible" - T.E. Lawrence

I had a wonderful surprise today... a package from Sweden from one of my bestest friends - Theresa! She sent me delicious swedish chocolates and these candy strings (kind of like licorice, but it's caramel), and a really nice card!

One of my favorite parts of the card: the SBG geography 101:

To top off the wonderfulness of this package, I had a notice in my mailbox saying there is a package at the post office for me from one, J Doster, another one of my bestest friends (see the sky scraper NY reference in the SBG card above).  Sadly I will not be able to pick it up until Saturday because the post office is not open in hours where I am not working (before 8 AM or after 7 pm). This just means I have something to look forward to!

Sometimes I wonder how we got here... Jenny living it up in NYC, Theresa blowing glass in Sweden, and me starting my career as a PT in the beautiful state of Colorado! I had a patient today ask me what she should call me, she wanted to call me Doctor! Sometimes I intimidate myself with the title. :p

I am very proud of all of us following all our dreams (and of all my other wonderful friends out there doing what they love)!

"We're All Mad Here" - Alice in Wonderland

Today I got a washer and dryer! This may not be exciting news to many of you, but for me it is wonderful! I no longer have to trek across the parking lot to the laundry building. A place where clothes go to die! There's the threat of bleach left in the machines, and the threat of all your clean clothes smelling of smoke (the  entire building reeks, it's not even that cold yet, why on earth are people smoking inside ?!?!?!).  In addition, the washers aren't even big enough to wash a load of socks, and they require $1 in quarters per load. Every time I want to do laundry I have to go find someone to trade cash for quarters, which at most stores you can do. Not at target, oh no. Apparently that is against their rules. No quarters for you! Needless to say, i'm very excited about having my own washer and dryer in the comfort of my own home.

I had a very unique Halloween this year, in that it wasn't the typical - go out and drink a ton and be ridiculous kind of weekend (and did not involve the tocatta and fugue during a midnight concert, dressed in costume, with objects and people flying around me). I guess all in all it was a tame weekend. We did dress up at work and had a pot luck party. Our patients cook some wonderful food! We had everything you could think of, including 2 different types of chili, corn bread, bean dip, some sort of rice and shrimp, an indian rice dish, cupcakes, homemade chocolate covered peanuts/pecans/peanut butter, apple pie, and lemonade! A true smorgasbord of food, but it was wonderful and I got to take some home.

Then on Saturday a bunch of us from work went to the public golf course in costume! You would never get away with that in Pinehurst! We were ridiculous. We had Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter, Patch (dalmation from 101 dalmations), Minnie Mouse, and of course me - Jessie from Toy Story. So we play our 9 holes of golf, and then decided we were starving and needed to eat before we would be able to drive home (yay cart lady with the yummy drinks), and we go into the clubhouse and there is a wedding going on! It wasn't your average wedding either, they were ALL in costume! Talk about a fun wedding. We ran into the mother of the bride while we were in the restroom, and she was telling Dyanna how her daughter loved Alice in Wonderland and how we should come crash the party, but to be careful because there are a lot of scary vampires around and we have beautiful necks. Seriously. ?!?!  There had to be an open bar somewhere. We wandered around a bit but it was stuffed with costumed wedding parties, and ended up just chilling on the back porch/bar area and eating a ton of deliciously fried foods.

On the actual day of Halloween, I met up with some guys I have met here at one of the local breweries. There were hardly any people there, but the beer and food was delicious! I enjoyed hanging out with just guys for once. Let me tell you how wonderful it is to spend time with boys (or I guess I should say men?) after being immersed among 31 girls in PT school for 3 years. yikes.

I had a fun time this weekend, but didn't see as many interesting costumes as I would have expected. I think I'm ok with that. I can't believe it's November already and I have worked a month already! Time flies....

On the streets where I live...

I live here!

Well, not technically here, but isn't it beautiful?!

Cruising with Katie through the Springs

This is my view on the way to work every day

This is my view on the way home!

It's snowing on the mountains!

More snow on Pike's Peak

Snow!!!

So I can't believe I have lived here a whole month already. It's gorgeous here and every time I leave my house, I wonder how I got so lucky to live here!  Not only do I live here, but I have a wonderful job with great people.  Life is good!

"Oh Great Pumpkin, where are you?" - Linus

Happy Humpday!

That never gets old for me!

This weekend I spent all day Saturday at a PT conference. The morning was interesting, but the afternoon dragged on a bit. I needed LOTS of coffee. Then that evening I went to Carolyn's house with Katie (my friend from Denver/Southern Pines) for a pumpkin carving party and game night. Here is my amazing pumpkin!! (I cheated a little and bought one of those kits with the designs... shh don't tell) ;)

Then Katie and I tried to go to Bristol Brewery (right near my house) but they were closed! And it wasn't even midnight! Toto, we're not in Atlanta anymore! So we abandoned and just went home and watched love actually and crashed (well she watched love actually, I passed out since i had been up since 5:30 AM at the conference).  The next morning we went a delicious breakfast place called the Olive Branch and they had amaaaazing fresh squeezed OJ (and also delicious food). YUM! Then we went shopping for Halloween costumes. My work has a Disney themed costume contest and pot-luck on Friday that I'm really excited about. I'm going to be Jessie from toy story.

So we basically bought a bunch of fabric from this fabric store, which let me tell you was an experience! The place was PACKED. We picked out fabric, then pulled a number so they could cut it for us. We were number 78 and they were only on number 42, so we waited for half an hour and tried to find chap patterns in about a hundred pattern books, among a ton of moms and screaming kids trying to get fabric for last minute halloween costumes. So I had cow print/dalmation print pattern and plain yellow fabric, and I had no idea how much I needed so I kept asking the lady how much would this be...etc etc. Finally she goes "what on earth are you making?!" I told them and she was very excited, the lady working next to us even turned and said "oooooh" and started making suggestions. Anyway it was chaotic and kind of a nightmare!  So we stopped by the Brewery...which WAS open on Sunday and you CAN purchase alcohol... Toto, we're not in the Bible Belt anymore.

So we bought some delicious beer: Winter Warlock  and Cheyenne Canon Ale

We took it home to drink while we put together costumes. I successfully made cow-print (more like dalmation print, but close enough) chaps and a giant belt buckle from cardboard. Here is the costume making process in photos!

"Adventure is just bad planning" - Roald Amundsen

Today I went for a short hike. Last night I was thinking that since I have Monday's off, that I should make a habit of doing something outdoorsy/mountain-y every Monday. Everyone else is stuck inside at work, so I should be out enjoying myself in honor of the rest of the working world (how very thoughtful of me)!  I recently purchased a guide to "easy mountain hikes" for Colorado Springs. So Sunday night I sat down with the book and assessed the list based on a) mileage (I'm still not used to the altitude, and somewhat out of shape, so best not to push it) b) location (I had "things" to do today too, so I didn't want to drive an hour to hike) and c) difficulty (see parenthesis for a).  Other things I considered - I am hiking alone (not really recommended) and generally going to carry little with me (not a long hike so not bringing a ton of emergency essentials).  So generally I decided to pick an easy little day hike that your average tourist or grandpa could handle.

And I know... every hiker should have with them an emergency/first aid kit, and every female should have some sort of defense mechanism like bear spray, for example, (and no, Lisa... you spray at the bears, not on yourself like deodorant! yuck!) But of course, I have not gotten any bear spray (it's actually quite expensive and hard to find) and really, not going to go to the trouble for a first aid kit. And so thinking through things before I left this morning, I think well maybe I should be on the safe side... so I grab some athletic tape and a pocket knife (first aid and self defense!), a granola bar and some water. Thinking that of course I have my cell phone if things get crazy. So maybe I wouldn't make the best boy scout... but it's just a short hike, right?  I picked a little easy 2 miler that's only about a 5 minute drive from my apartment.

I walk outside and it is FREEZING! well, not literally, but 49 degrees is too cold for shorts and t-shirt, and it also looks like rain. So I layer up, grab my bag, and head on my way.

I brought my camera, and at the base of the hike is a little bubbling brook, so I take out my camera to take pictures for all of you, and of course the battery is dead because I never recharged it after the wedding weekend. (next time I will have lots of pretty pictures!)

So I'm freezing, no camera, but damn it all I'm going on my Monday hike! I start trucking along happily for about 5 minutes before I am wheezing and gasping for breath. Meanwhile a 72 year old man passes by my on his way down with his little Yorkie puppy. So I keep on moving despite my breathlessness. The views were gorgeous, the green/gold/red of the other mountains in the fall, the glimpse of hikers on other peaks, the view of the city skyline, and once again I could see my apartment! So I get to what I think couldn't possibly be the top, although it was at the peak, but I could have sworn I remembered that there was supposed to be another trail that  collided with that one. So I kept going, down what I thought was a passable if yet steep trail. Well I slip and find my footing for a while and then realize that I am at the edge of a cliff, and not really anywhere to go.  And then I think... well this isn't "easy" and there's no way that Yorkie puppy could have climbed this (I like to give the older gentleman a little bit of credit, i mean there are lots of amazing active older adults in Colorado). I'm staring down the cliff edge wondering if there is a way to climb down there, or if I've missed something...

When I suddenly had these images of a) me sliding down and breaking something on the way b) getting attacked by a bear and being too stupid to bring bear spray (I remember that you are supposed to not run away from bears, but back away slowly... but do you yell loudly at them to stop and threaten them, or whisper quietly and calmly to them to tell them you are a friend??) and c) lost in the mountains with only a granola bar, a pocket knife, and some athletic tape. (I forgot to mention, at this point my cell phone battery has died) So after these fleetingly horrifying thoughts, I turn around and climb back up to the peak again. But I am stubborn, and I want to keep hiking, and not believe that I've reached the point where I have to turn around and go back. (I had a map, but it was really mostly useless besides telling where the trails meet and trail heads are off the road, of course the detailed book was left behind in the car).  So I decide to follow another path that was less steep down the other side of the peak. It got kinda grassy, still these tiny gravelly rocks that I am slipping and sliding on, but then I discovered a very gorgeous overview.  Also at this point am starting to feel kind of dizzy... altitude? dehydration? sheer excitement at my adventurousness?  so I stopped to enjoy most of my water, a granola bar, and the beautiful view. Feeling much better, I continue to pick my way down (stooping under tree branches and avoiding scraping prickly looking plants) and I saw this amazing bright blue winged bird, that turned out to be a Stellar's Jay.  It was gorgeous!!! Finally somehow I find my way back to a solid, flat, even, non prickly or slippery path... the original path I had climbed up! I am very happy I am back on track, but sad that this obviously means my hike is over and is a sign that I should just head home.

So I begin my trek back, and find another path that I decide to follow.  I climbed up to the top of the ridge (ducking again for tree branches and climbing up precarious rocks), and once again realized that my path went nowhere. I decided my extra little adventurous path picking was enough to satisfy my craving to hike more, and returned to the beaten path and back down to the trail head where my car was parked.

Thankfully I did not get lost (mostly), break anything, nor was attacked by wild animals.  I think next time I'll at least bring another person, and a better map! Maybe I just need to pick longer hikes so I can satisfy my hiking craving and not have to make my own trails.... Next weekend, I may try to convince a friend to go hike with me, there are a couple that are longer and "moderate" difficulty that I really want to do before it gets to cold/starts snowing.

Other good news - I went running on Saturday through the running trails at a nearby park. It was a gorgeous day, and I ran through all these wild fields (on a path) and I actually made it almost a mile before I had to stop! I'm finally somewhat adjusting to the altitude! As I was running I realized the empty field was absolutely covered in dead sunflowers... I can't wait to see it in the spring!

On the PT front - we had a student start today (I wasn't there, but today was supposed to be his first day). He's a 3rd year student on long terms, so it should be interesting how that goes.  I feel like a glorified student... finally getting paid... but still there is so much I'm learning and re-learning! I am very proud of my new taping and manual skills i've learned in the past 8 days though. And I have two patients who told me how wonderful I am and how they will be sending people to us (so already I'm earning my keep!) So things are looking good on the real-world front.

Time to read and crash before hitting the grind tomorrow! Thanks as always for reading!

A short list of exciting things...

So yeah... in my previous post,  by 25th post I really meant 30th (this is my 31st)!

Definitely going to be a short one, because it is late and I am in DIRE NEED of a shower.... you would think working in outpatient you wouldn't come home so often feeling like you need to scrub off every inch of skin... but there are days.  I'm just glad I'm not in a hospital!

I'm super excited about this weekend for many reasons....
1) I get PAID! wooohooo!

2) I'm going to Denver tomorrow night with my friend Katie and we are going to go see her friend's band. Very exciting!

3) It's 3 days long and I get to sleep lots.

It's starting to get cold here.... and the snow on the top of Pike's Peak is starting to be a daily view. I can't wait for the first snow (and more importantly... my first ski outing of the season)!  I think with my first paycheck (besides starting to pay loans and bills) I may purchase a season pass for myself. :)

Wildlife and wildflowers

My dearest faithful readers...

I'm trying to be better at this... I really am, I promise! So thank you x 1000000 for sticking with me throughout my blogging/not-blogging. (this is my 25th post!! woohoo!)

Let me tell you something, 3 day weekends are fantastic!!! A) I got to catch up on sleep. B) i got to spend time outside in this beautiful state C) I got to catch up on sleep.... did I mention sleeping? Apparently it takes a good month to two months to acclimate to living in this altitude (apx 6500 ft above sea level).  What do I have to say to that? well it's a four letter word that I'm not going to spell out for the masses... but you get it. So that blows. What does adjusting to altitude feel like you may ask? Well... it mostly feels like dehydration, brain fog, GI distress, sleepiness, brain fog, dehydration, and a constant state of exhaustion (or maybe thats from working 10 hour days and the stress of being new?). Anyway thats the general idea...

But this weekend was wonderful, my bosses/mentors took me golfing. I was really bad until about 5th hole when the girl in the cart came around with beverages. I had a captain and lemonade, and got picked on for being super southern (imagine that?!). Afterwards, my golf game greatly improved. It was really sunny, and warm enough for capris and a polo shirt, but as the afternoon progressed the clouds came down over the mountains and you could literally see it snowing up on PIke's Peak. I wish I had had a camera... it was beauuutiful!

Sunday I mostly slept and did laundry and other odds and ends. Monday I decided I was going to attempt a run.  My lofty goal was to run the .4 miles (maybe less) down to this regional park, then run around the trails through. Well I get to maybe about .25 miles and have to stop because I feel like my heart is going to pound right through my chest, so obviously this is going well. I finally alternate walking and running and make it to the park. I get there and realize the running loop is at least 1.5 miles (maybe 3 total loop) and so I start to attempt... run... wheeze... walk... run... wheeze.... walk. It is really sad actually. So then on the way back (uphill) to my apartment, I start running again and suddenly slam to a stop... there is a HUMONGOUS DEER about maybe 2 car lengths in front of me in the middle of the path, with his horns poking up, and two female deer with him. The male is staring at me what I considered to be sinisterly. So I anxiously waited for cars to clear so I could cross the road to the other side and not run into giant deer. I mean, I'm used to deer being from NC, but these were HUGE (and no, not elk, just plain deer) and didn't seem to care that they were smack dab in the middle of my sidewalk. Thankfully I made it home safely without having a massive MI or getting trampled by wild deer.

Another cool thing about CO (besides run in with deer, and bad altitude side effects) is the wild sunflowers. You see them on the sides of the highways, in the parks, spurting through sidewalk cracks. They are wildly beautiful.

Such a gorgeous state I can't believe I live here (as I've said many times).  Can't wait for the snow!!!

10,000 hours of practice

Today was my first full week of real life work.  I love the clinic I'm in, the people are wonderful, the mentors are amazingly brilliant, and i've learned a lot in just the 4 days I've been there (yes my week is 4 days, very long, full days... and i'm looking forward to my 3 day weekend). That all being said, I find myself battling the same old fears - am I really ready for this? do I really know enough? Will I ever feel like I know enough?

One of my bosses/mentors said that it takes at least one to two years to be comfortable in this. Part of the challenge is the diversity each individual brings, and the complexity of the human body (and mind).  But that's also why this job is so wonderful, so many different people and characters, so many different challenges. Each day, or even each hour, is a completely different story.

But I'm trying to conquer this fear that's been dogging me the past 3 years - what if I totally blow it, what if I've just fooled everyone into thinking I know what I'm doing, why do I feel half the time like I know nothing, and the other half that I'm almost getting it? It's all wrapped up in the reason I decided to do this, the complexity, the problem solving, the challenges... but I think my nervousness is holding me back (same old story x3 years, as every CI of mine knows)...The good news is apparently I'm up to par for a new grad...so they tell me, but as with anything, some days are better than others. Today was not my forte.

As another PT friend of mine quoted... "to be an expert at any one thing, you need at least 10,000 hours of practice" - Malcolm Gladwell. One of the bosses said that of course I can't feel (insert ligament/bone/muscle/other body structure here) now, but after 1,000 patients I'll be able to feel it on everyone. I hate guessing....

It's so frustrating being "the newbie." The good news is that I don't have a full schedule, they are taking the time to teach and demonstrate and let me practice mobilizations and taping. All the clinic staff are willing to let me practice on them, and all with variations of problems of their own.  I kinda wish there wasn't so much time in between my last clinic and this one, as I feel like I've lost a lot of info (and I'm sure cramming things into my head for boards didn't help, although you think it would).  Once again, my mentors said that they teach us in school and test us just enough so we won't kill anyone, then send us on our way. There's so much more to this....

The bad news is I'm trying so hard to not mess up, that I'm afraid to do anything and therefore missing things and can't even manage a simple low back pain eval (insert evil laughter here... aka as simple as a spine can get). And I guess it doesn't help that I'm still trying to get used to the documentation, which in the long run will most likely be a time saver, but right now... ugh. The good news is, in a few weeks hopefully I will know a ton more, and feel at least semi-comfortable with this stage I'm in. Also doubly good news is that I've got really great people to learn from... I just hope I don't disappoint them!

Hopefully next week will go better (as they promise me every week will get easier). Right now, hopefully I can get my body accustomed to the altitude and time out here. And maybe not be so exhausted after my 10 hour work day (which is really 11 cause I spend my whole lunch on documentation... hoorah for being a new grad). I'm looking forward to sleeping lots this weekend, finally getting furniture and getting unpacked, and maybe going on a hike or two.

Oh! Today on the way to work, I noticed there is snow on the tops of the mountains!!! So exciting. We were all talking about the snow and skiing and how excited we are all about winter! Hoorah Colorado.
